Longan farmers start training program

A group of Longan farmers near Chanthaburi started their IPM training program in December with a session on learning to recognize pests and natural enemies in their crop. Visits to the fields revealed that pesticide use is causing serious problems. The very frequent spraying with cocktails of pesticides is a health risk for the farmers and their families and the careless handling of the chemicals result in contamination of the environment.

Future training sessions will continue to focus on observing the ecosystem and making sound crop management decisions and will also pay attention to reducing the risks of pesticide use.

Longan growers observe their crop and collect pests and natural enemies.

Longan growers identify the insect they collected from the field and prepare to present their observations.

Guided by an experienced facilitator, the observations are presented and discussed.

Heavy deposits of pesticides are found throughout the field.

Longan growers frequently spray cocktails of different chemicals. During some spray sessions, they mixed two insecticides and two fungicides together.

Careless handling of pesticides results in contamination of the soil. Empty containers are forming a serious threat for people, animals and the environment.
