Ground beetles belong to the family Carabidae.
Both the adults and larvae of ground beetles are predators. They
feed on eggs, larvae, pupae and sometimes on the adults of a large
variety of other insects that live on the soil.
Many species of ground beetles hide during daytime when they can
be found under stones, leaves, or other plant debris. At night they
become active and start running around hunting for their prey. Some
species hunt during during daytime.
Conservation
Ground beetles and their larvae can be protected by avoiding the use of
insecticides.
As they need debris to hide when they are resting it is useful to
provide some places where they can find shelter.
