Description and life cycle

The adult is a moth can lay 100-200 eggs/one moth. They lay a single egg on fruit near stem of fruit as the fruit still young. The larva just come out of the egg will make a hole and go inside the fruit to eat the seed. It difficult to see the hole because it is very small and durian peel is enlarge, the hole will be closed. Most Destroyed durian is a hard seed stage, the larva develop inside the seed about 30 days, calculated by the time, 48 day since we found the first moth till we found completely larva ready to be a pupal stage, expect that the period since the moth out of pupae, mating, lay the eggs and become the larva, take 10 days. So the larva stage is about 38 days. The larva will make a hole, eat inside the seed and release the dung on durian meat. They are in the fruit until the fruit is mature. As they complete or the fruit drop off, the larva will make a hole 5.0-8.0 mm. diameter and comes out to be a pupal stage in the soil. 1 month after pupal stage, the pupae is activated by the rain to become the moth. The moth which is trapped, attracted by light trap, will have 7-10 day life.

Plant damage and plant compensation

Durian seed borer is the major pest and damage durian produce in eastern, which is the big durian farm. Expected that durian seed borer have a native place in malaysia and spread into Thailand by southern. Farmer take the southern native seed to be the stock because it is big seed size and when grow it we will get a healthy stock, rapidly growth and high tolerant to disease. Seed reproduction which uses southern seed may be get seed borer together. The farmers call "south seed borer" or "malay seed borer". From the external we can not know which durian is destroyed. Seed borer destroy fruit quality by release the dung on durian meat so farmer can not sell fresh durian, the farmer loss their benefit so they have to bring durian to make the preservation product. The complete seed borer, ready to be pupae, out of the fruit and become pupae in the soil. Farmer see just the hole not found the seed borer in the fruit or sometime they know that they loss product as after harvesting, after seed borer comes out, so the seed borer is called "the hole borer". In the past we found that the consumer of both internal and external market do not trust in the produce due to the seed borer is stick in the fruit, might be lost market.

. Farmer does not take durian seed from another place. Carefully select seed as necessary to use foreign seed or dip the seed in insecticide before move the seed, the borer was dying.
2. When durian fruit is 1 ½ month, 6 weeks after fruit setting, use turbid white plastic bag or translucent plastic bag wrap it and clip below side to allow the water flow down and the moth can not lay eggs.(Sarute, 1996/97)
3. Using white neon light to induce borer moth is black light trap. The moth trapping could decrease dispersion of the borer too much, due to one month can lay 100-200 eggs black light trap is used to be the inspector borer spread. As necessary to use chemical it increase the chemical efficiency, decrease the time of chemical spraying since durian start flowering.

What can be done when Durian seed borer is present in the field

diazinon (class II), cypermethrin/phosalone (both class II) ... verify side effects natural enemies.
